THE OLD EPSOMIAN LODGE

Who Are We?

FMH LondonThe Old Epsomian Lodge was founded in 1911 and is recognised by United Grand Lodge of England (“UGLE”). It draws its membership predominantly from former pupils, parents and staff from Epsom College, Epsom, Surrey and has around 30 members of all ages.

London Grand Rank UGLEWe meet four evenings a year. The venue is Freemasons' Hall, Great Queen Street, London WC2 (Nearest tube: Holborn) and the meeting dates are the second Wednesdays in February, April, June and November. In recent years, we have been fortunate to be able to hold our November meeting at Epsom College. After our London meetings, we dine within a private function room at a good Italian restaurant nearby.

The OE Lodge is numbered 3561 in the UGLE directory of UK Masonic lodges and our ceremonies are in accordance with Emulation workings.

Our SECRETARY, welcomes Masonic enquiries from all former pupils, staff and parents of pupils. If you would like to join but are not connected with Epsom College, your enquiries might possibly better directed to United Grand Lodge of England but email our secretary for details.

History: Freemasons and Epsom College

The letter alongside this text was written by John Propert in 1860 and was sent to approximately two hundred prominent freemasons. The letter indicates that Freemasonry played a prominent part in founding and long-term fundraising for the Royal Medical Benevolent College as Epsom College was then known. Over a five year period, John Propert’s  annual fundraising Festivals held at the Freemasons Tavern raised around £16,500 (over £1M in current day terms) to get the school construction work underway.

John Propert was Past Master of Lodge of the Nine Muses No. 235 one of the oldest lodges in Freemasonry and still going strong to this day. Both he and other founders had very grand plans for the main block of Epsom College - compare the logo at the head of the letter to the buildings that have since been  constructed.

OE Masonic Events Diary

Please click  HERE  to see our diary and important dates for our Sister lodges during the year. Other events include:-

The Crisis “Square Mile” Run: June

London Freemasons support Crisis Square Mile RunCrisis is a charity that helps homeless people in London. The Square Mile run around the City of London is their flagship fund raising event. Each year, several OE Masons form part of the London Masonic team that takes part in this event to help Crisis raise money.

Each yer around 100 London masons take part in this event. If you haven’t run for a while, you might find the 3.5 mile run (or walk, whichever preferred) a bit gruelling, but from the photo on our “OE Photos” page, you will see we survived to tell the tale!

If you would like to make a contribution to this charity at any time, (either in terms of time as say, a race marshall, or donation) then please either email our secretary or visit Crisis’ web site on  www.crisis.org.uk

November Meeting, Epsom College Wednesday 12 November 2008

Epsom CollegeBy kind permission of the Headmaster, we now usually hold our November meetings in Main Hall at Epsom College rather than Great Queen Street. This is traditionally a meeting where we look forward to welcoming all OE’s who belong to other lodges as well as other Masonic friends and guests from far and wide and is very well attended. We then enjoy pre-dinner drinks with members of the Common Room and the festive board dinner laid on afterwards by the Epsom College catering staff afterwards is magnificent. If you are an OE Freemason and would like to visit our lodge, but cannot often make it into Central London, then this is the meeting for you!

OE Lodge Open Meeting 10 June 2009 (Provisional)

We held our last Open Meeting at Freemasons' Hall, Great Queen Street, London WC2 in 2002 and it was very well received. At the meeting we conducted our routine business, Closed and then welcomed our non-masonic friends and guests both male and female.

Grand Temple

Our visitors were then treated to a series of short  presentations on the Organisation of Freemasonry, Masonic History, What Goes On In The Lodge Room and finally a tour around the lodge room itself. Our guests were welcomed in at 6pm and the meeting concluded an hour later followed by a super dinner at our usual restaurant nearby.

If you missed the last open meeting and might be interested in the next one, then make a provisional note in your diary now.
